Our Sustainability Program

Tampa International Airport has long demonstrated its dedication to sustainability and resilience, and has achieve recognition and accolades at the local, state, and federal level, as well as across the aviation industry. already begun to build our legacy.  TPA's formal sustainability efforts began in 2009, when launched a reclaimed water program which has saved over 450 million gallons of potable water used for landscape irrigation and other initiatives. By 2012, TPA embarked on drafting its first formal Sustainable Management Plan (SMP), which was completed in 2014, and subsequently updated in 2024. 

 

There have been many achievements experienced since the initial SMP, including:

EPG Solar
  • Implementation of EV chargers in public parking areas
  • Transition of an array of fleet vehicles to alternative fuels
  • Increased waste diversion rates at the Main Terminal and Airsides
  • Reduction of averaged annual energy and water usage
  • Installation of a 2MW solar array atop the Economy Parking Garage
  • Creation of employee wellness and community support programs
  • Focus on sustainable development, including:
    • Envision Verified - Master Plan Phase 1 (Rental Car; SkyConnect; Main Terminal Expansion)
    • LEED Platinum SkyCenter One Office Building (Core & Shell)
    • LEED Gold Certification for TPA office spaces (SkyCenter One: Floors 3-5)

By 2024, TPA completed its first update to its SMP, complete with 17 goals and 55 strategies were developed to further focus on Resource Management; Sustainable Engagement; Adaptation and Mitigation; and Transportation. The complete goals and initiatives, along with the detailed implementation plan can be found in the Sustainable Management Plan.

By 2025, TPA completed its first "Responsible Growth Report", evaluating the first year of progress of the 2030 goals outlined in the updated SMP. The CY 2024 Responsible Growth Report can be viewed here: 

Updated Achievements Include:

Skycenter One
  • Reduction in energy and natural gas usage
  • Reduction in potable water use
  • Waste Diversion Rate of 15% per passenger since 2014
  • Completed update of TPA's Sustainable Design Criteria Manual
  • Creation of first Sustainable Procurement Program
  • 50% of actions outlined in Resilience Action Plan (RAP) complete
  • Formal "Florida-Friendly" landscaping specs
  • Increased percentage of light-duty and bus fleets to alternative fuels
  • Expanded transportation options to TPA; including shuttles and certified "Bike Friendly Business" program.
  • Increased employee and community engagement, including formal "Memorandum of Understanding" (MOU) with the University of South Florida
