The Opportunity

For more than 50 years, Tampa International Airport has been building a diverse and internationally acclaimed art collection that reflects our vibrant community. It is with great pride and anticipation that we now look to tomorrow. Your creative and innovative works can help create moments of respite, introspection and joy that the Tampa Bay community and our millions of visitors from around the world will experience for years to come.

Thanks to an expanding airport, we have identified eight new locations and now invite artists to submit their materials for consideration. A wide range of forms and media for the artwork will be considered for commissions including freestanding sculpture, wall-mounted or ceiling-hung art, technology-based art and possibly functional elements.

About TPA

TPA is a major economic driver for the Tampa Bay region and is the gateway to the west coast of Florida. TPA consistently ranks among the world’s most beloved airports, serving 25 million annual passengers with flights to more than 100 nonstop destinations. The Airport has received top awards at the national and international level, including a ranking in the J.D. Power survey as the #1 Large Airport in North America for Customer Satisfaction two years in a row.

In recent years, TPA has completed 16 new public art installations, including a world-famous 21-foot pink flamingo sculpture in the Main Terminal.

The New Locations

In 2024, “America’s Favorite Airport” broke ground on a new, approximately 600,000 square foot, 16-gate terminal known as Airside D. The $1.5 billion project is expected to be completed in late 2028. Airside D will help us continue our cutting edge tradition – a world-class facility featuring the latest technology. Six of the new locations will be within Airside D.

Additionally, one new art installation will be designated for each of the two recently expanded security checkpoint areas for existing Airsides A & E.

Make no mistake, Airside D will be all about the passenger journey and it will be magnificent.

The Airside will feature two levels as well as a mezzanine for two lounges, a bright and spacious international passenger arrival processing area on the first floor, glass boarding bridges to allow views of the airfield for travelers, and new shopping and dining locations. The Airside will help TPA, which currently serves an estimated 25 million passengers annually, serve up to 35 million annual passengers by 2037.

Please visit AirsideD.com for details on the new terminal building.

ELIGIBILITY

This Call for Artists is open to visual artists working in any medium with experience executing their ideas from concept to installation completion, meeting a specified budget and timeframe, and working in the public realm with public agencies.

THEMES AND OBJECTIVES

The goal of the public art program is to provide a variety of opportunities for the traveling public to experience and engage in artistic excellence. The Public Art Program enhances the Airport environment while providing cultural awareness and support for the arts. The Airport’s art collection reflects the abundant natural resources and rich cultural heritage of the region and celebrates the legacy of Tampa Bay as the birthplace of commercial aviation.

ARTIST SELECTION PROCESS

The process has two phases.

During the first phase a Technical Evaluation Committee will conduct a review of all CaFÈ submitted applications and will develop a short list of Qualified Artists.

During the second phase, after the Airport Board’s approval, the Airport Public Art Committee will invite artists from the group of Qualified Artists to submit a proposal. The proposal will include a $4,000 stipend to each invited artist or artist team which will be used to develop 3-D views, a maquette, photographs of a model, or other representation to clearly communicate the invited artist’s or artist team’s concept and design intent.
