Global Aviation Holdings Picks Tampa for Growth

December 10, 2010

TAMPA – At its end-of-the-year 2010 monthly meeting, the Tampa International Airport board of directors unanimously approved a new 10-year agreement with Global Aviation Holdings Inc., which owns World Airways and North American Airlines.

Global is the largest commercial provider of charter air transportation for the U.S. military, and a major provider of worldwide commercial global passenger and cargo air transportation services. It will lease facilities at Tampa International Airport and relocate the airline maintenance operations to Tampa with a staff of approximately 43 people.

“Global selecting Tampa for expansion is great news. This project creates high paying jobs which are a terrific boost to our local economy,” stated John Wheat, Interim Executive Director, Tampa International Airport. “It’s a good reminder of the positive impact Tampa International Airport has on our business climate.”

Once in full operation sometime in second quarter 2011, it is anticipated that three to four wide-body aircraft will be on the ground daily. The airlines’ mechanics will perform line maintenance on the aircraft and heavier maintenance is expected to be accomplished by Pemco World Services, Inc., another tenant at Tampa International that currently leases the former US Airways and Delta maintenance hangars. Global’s total estimated first year rents and fees to the airport will be $568,256.

Finding a viable tenant for the former Emery facility would not have been possible without the cooperative effort of the Aviation Authority staff working with the Florida Governor’s Office of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development, Enterprise Florida, Hillsborough County, City of Tampa and Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Corporation.

Global Aviation Holdings Inc., based in Peachtree City, Ga., is the parent company of North American Airlines and World Airways. North American Airlines, founded in 1989 and based in Jamaica, N.Y., operates passenger charter flights using B757-200ER and B767-300ER aircraft. World Airways, founded in 1948 and based in Peachtree City, Ga., operates cargo and passenger charter flights using B747-400 and MD-11 aircraft.
