The local market for Tampa International is defined as a 50 mile radius around the airport as well as a smaller market extending out 50 to 100 miles. Counties inside this 50 mile radius include Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Polk. The extended market contains parts of Hernando, Pasco, Manatee, and Sarasota counties.
The Tampa Bay area is one of the largest manufacturing regions in the State of Florida. Air cargo service is provided on both a scheduled and non-scheduled basis by passenger airlines utilizing the lower deck, or belly hold of their aircraft, and all- cargo airlines utilizing freighter aircraft.
All-cargo carriers at TPA are comprised of both integrator carriers and non-integrator cargo carriers. Traditional or non-integrator all-cargo carriers primarily provide only airport-to-airport service, like passenger carriers, but with fewer restrictions regarding size. Integrator carriers provide more door-to-door service for the shipper of air cargo.
The primary all-cargo carriers serving TPA are Airborne Express and Federal Express. The remaining carriers, with the exception of Capital, are air taxi operators using small aircraft typically carrying blood samples and bank documents. These carriers are Flight Express and US Checks.
The number one commodity shipped by air out of Florida is industrial/commercial machinery and computers, followed by smaller electrical/electronic machinery and supplies. The third most popular export group includes optical instruments and lenses, medical and dental equipment, and photographic equipment. For passenger airlines, a large portion of cargo is comprised of goldfish and human remains.

Air Cargo Marketing Study
The Aviation Authority has been updating and evaluating the Air Cargo Marketing analysis for Tampa International Airport. Air cargo service is provided on a scheduled and non-scheduled basis by the passenger airlines and by the integrated all-cargo carriers. Currently, there is no regularly scheduled service by traditionally non-integrated all-cargo carriers.
With the Tampa area being one of the largest manufacturing regions in the state, it is essential to identify and quantify the existing and future air cargo market at Tampa. More critically important, to determine whether the local Tampa Bay air cargo market is adequately served. The primary focus of the update concentrated on Tampa International, but our three general aviation airports were also considered. A final report and plan has been completed.
