Tampa International Airport’s inaugural Friday Flight arrived right on time Oct. 5 with music, swing dancing, and a happy hour martini bar.

Local swing dance clubs converged on the airport event and showed off their fast paced moves to the sounds of local power lounge act, the Vodkanauts.

Larry and Kathy Church happened upon the festivities after checking into the airport hotel where they planned to spend the night before catching a 6 a.m. flight to China.

“We would probably come here and pay the parking ticket just to come out here and listen to the music,” Larry Church said. “It’s fantastic.”

He said he got a kick out of watching passengers entering the terminal from the shuttles.

“The singer said welcome to Tampa and everyone started laughing and clapping,” he said. “I’ve been flying out of this airport since it opened and it’s nice to see how much better it keeps getting.”

The performance by the Vodkanauts drew Donna Quisenberry, a friend of one of the band members, to the airport for the event.

“I was curious about the venue,” she said. “The travelers all really like this. You can see it on their faces.”

Dennis Rodriguez, who lives in Sarasota and stopped to listen to the band after arriving in Tampa from Milwaukee, said the new entertainment series is just one more thing that makes Tampa International Airport special.

“Every time you come here there’s something new,” he said. “I travel 250,000 miles a year. When I come home, I want to feel welcome, and that’s how I feel here. I live in this area because of the airport.”

Robert Drummer read about the event on Twitter and brought his wife, Cyndi, to the airport for an evening of music, cocktails and appetizers at First Flight, the wine bar in the main terminal.

“I’m an airport geek anyway,” he said. “But if you do this again, we’ll come back.”

Don’t miss the next Friday Flight on November 16, featuring acoustic rock band John Q and a special performance by the Hoola Monsters. The fun begins at 5:30 p.m. in the main terminal on Level 3 between Airsides A and C.
